MIT Labs Develops New System to Remotely Control Robots Using VR Technology

Oculus Rift's launch is exciting for gaming fans, but the VR glasses also have a practical side. MIT scientists have successfully developed a system that can use the Oculus Rift to remotely control robots. They believe that this system will allow blue-collar workers to work outside the hundred miles.

With this kind of robot that can be controlled remotely, people can perform wireless and remote operation in another place. One of the most important applications of this technology is to carry out activities in the universe. However, it can also be built on the earth, for example, can be applied to the disaster area and surgery.

The new system was developed by the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory to make manufacturing work easier. Manufacturing jobs often require staff to visit the site to operate the machine. Scientists now use VR and robots to allow them to work remotely.

The new system was born out of the concept of a “brain dwarf model.” This concept is to allow the dwarf to manipulate the body into the brain. To implement this system, the research team created a virtual control room where users can enter the virtual control room to navigate through Oculus Rift helmets and Touch handles.

Here, the user can manipulate the real existing Baxter industrial robots to crawl, move and recycle through the virtual controller. The user can operate according to the sensor display, and the motion of the robot arm will be displayed in the display in real time.

The research team believes that their system solves some of the shortcomings of working in the existing virtual environment. The data of the new system takes up less space because the user can see the robot in real time, so there is no need to perform 3D modeling for the robot. And this kind of system should be able to avoid discomfort such as nausea and headache caused by signal delay, because the new system can allow users to continuously receive visual feedback.

Jeffrey Lipton, a postdoctoral fellow in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, is the lead author of this new system paper. He said that such a system will help humans achieve remote control of robots, so blue-collar workers will be able to work remotely with the help of the information technology revolution, just like white-collar workers.

The research team has conducted a series of tests on this system, including allowing the user to manipulate the Baxter to grasp screws, wires, squares, and the like. The results show that the success rate of this system is much higher than other methods used for similar operations, users with gaming experience are more likely to get used to this operation.

Researchers say that this technology can even “gamify” manufacturing jobs and allow gamers to work remotely. In one test, the team even used this system to operate the Baxter robot at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a Washington hotel. The distance between the two reached 240 kilometers. Although the team is using Baxter and Oculus to implement this technology, they believe that this technology will also be applicable to other robots and HTC Vive helmets.
