The widely acclaimed director, Spielberg, warned the world that humans are falling into the dangerous medium of VR.
Steven Spielberg has warned that whether we like it or not, a future dominated by VR is coming.
On Friday at the Comic Con in San Diego, Spielberg showed off his upcoming sci-fi movie. The highly acclaimed director highlighted one of his most recent recurring topics.
Last year, Virtual Reality (VR) thrived in the film industry and the VR project was also launched for the first time this year at the Cannes Film Festival.
The new film “Carne Y Arena†by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, directed by Birdman, premiered in Crosette in May this year and was released at the same time as Spielberg's animated “Blooming Dream Giantâ€.
At the time, Spielberg, the director of Schindler's List, warned that VR could pose a danger to the entire industry.
"I think we are caught in the dangerous medium of VR," Spielberg said. "The only reason I said that VR is dangerous is because it gives viewers too much freedom and viewers no longer go from the perspective of the story. Watch it, but choose to watch it from a certain perspective."
He said, "I just hope that when VR takes us to a world where we can look around and let us choose ourselves, we don't want to discard the story itself."
And now, even if he didn't change his mind, he at least began to embrace the future.
In presenting his new movie Player One, Spielberg talks about the challenges he faced when he adapted Ernest Cline’s book. It is a book about the future of an anti-utopia. Global warming destroys the entire world. After that, humans hid in the VR world. The hero of the movie lived in 2044, but through VR technology, his life was immersed in the popular culture of the 1980s.
Spielberg said: “In the past ten years, I’ve been involved in many things, but during the filming of this movie, I kept going between fast-forward and flashback. It feels great – whether you like it or not, I think that this kind of future is waiting for us all."
The 70-year-old director now sees VR as the beginning of a new possibility. In the VR world, humans can do anything they can imagine.
One of Spielberg's current difficulties is to refer to the works he once produced on the nostalgic theme and popular culture of the 1980s. He said he was worried that he would be stigmatized for "serious vanity and serious theft."
For the author of the book, letting such a well-known director adapt his book is a natural match.
"To be honest, I never thought that my book would be arranged into a movie." Ernest Cline said at the anime show, "I never thought we could make this movie because we needed to be like Steven Spielber. People like this one to direct."
Player One will be released on March 30, 2018.
