A radar sensor detects the train within the tunnel.
Overview: In our vehicle inspection series, we have been researching various vehicle detection technologies, their advantages and important considerations when implementing solutions. Because it can reliably detect vehicles, it has obvious advantages in asset management, resource allocation, site safety and traffic control.
This article describes how and when radar sensors can be used for vehicle detection, as well as the main advantages of this technology.
What is a radar sensor?
Radar sensors use continuous frequency modulated wave (FMCW) radar to reliably detect moving or stationary targets, including cars, trains, trucks and cargo, in extreme weather conditions.
Advantages of radar sensors for vehicle detection
1. Remote detection
Radar sensors are ideal for long-distance outdoor applications. Many sensors can also be configured to detect objects within a specified distance range, ignoring objects that exceed the set point, thereby improving accuracy.
2. Fear of bad weather conditions
The difference from photoelectric or ultrasonic sensors is that radar sensors are not affected by wind, rain, fog, light, moisture and temperature. Therefore, accurate detection can be performed in an outdoor environment.
Trains can make the environment extremely harsh and make it harder for mechanical and technical equipment to function properly. Trains that pass through the tunnel can bring strong winds, dust and debris, while increasing the likelihood of impact. Radar sensors reliably detect the presence of trains even under harsh conditions. Similarly, even in extreme weather conditions, radar sensors can be used to reliably detect the presence of large trucks beside outdoor loading docks.
3. Flexible installation
For train detection applications, radar sensors have many advantages, including flexible installation. Since radar sensors do not need to be mounted on train tracks, installation and maintenance are safer and easier than other sensing technologies. In addition, since the radar sensor is not mounted on the track, the risk of equipment damage due to high impact force is small.
The radar sensor detects large trucks at the loading dock.
Important note
For radar sensors, detecting small targets can be challenging, such as when the gap between the vehicle and the vehicle is too small. Therefore, a common application of radar sensors is to detect train cars, which are large and predictable.
