Disassemble to explore the "iPad" case without screws

Can you create a new market for network terminals that is different from mobile phones and personal computers? Apple's "iPad" has gathered a lot of eager eyes. This article explores Apple's hardware design intent and innovative measures for the iPad through the disassembly of the body.

On April 3, 2010, Apple began selling the Internet terminal "iPad" in the United States. The iPad is a tablet PC equipped with the iPhone OS, the A4 Special Application IC (ASIC) and the 9.7-inch capacitive touch LCD panel. Although it looks like an enlarged version of the iPhone and thus seems to lack innovation, it is very popular in the market. 300,000 units were sold on the day of the sale. “Because demand has greatly exceeded expectations” (the company language), its listing date outside the US was postponed to the end of May after one month. Market research companies and Taiwanese manufacturers responsible for providing components have even more optimistic forecasts that they will become "popular products with over 10 million sales."

Application developer aggregation

The current iPad has the disadvantages of being too heavy for a long time and the fact that the finger is easy to leave marks on the touch panel. In terms of price, in addition to the early adapter, it has not fallen to the price that consumers can easily purchase. Without 3G communication, the cheapest model for 16GB NAND flash is $499.

Therefore, the iPad's success has not been known, but it is likely that it will create a market different from mobile phones, laptops and netbooks (Figure 1). Application developers are concentrating on the iPad. According to a survey by Mobclix, the iPad app reached 3,122 on April 5. Among them are many e-book and newspaper reading applications that consumers are concerned about in recent years.

The iPad seems to be the consumer electronics product that the world's most consumers and manufacturers expect and pay attention to in the first half of 2010. The background factors are listed in the figure.

One of the app developers who are fascinated with the iPad, Ubiquitous Entertainment, Japan’s representative director and CEO, Shimizu Hiroshi, wrote on his blog: “The iPhone is just for the iPad’s listing. It’s rare on the market. The experimental model that can be proud of its completion. The iPad is the mainstay. The previous iPhone does not have to say that all terminals like the iPhone will be dwarfed."

Apple has used the intuitive operating system that was already on the iPhone for the big picture of the iPad netbook specification. This greatly improves the operability of the touch panel and also brings about the diversity of applications. Companies that currently provide assistance to application developers on the capital side have emerged. For example, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), a well-known US venture capital industry, has invested a total of $100 million in developers developing iPad applications.

With the help of technicians in the electronics manufacturing and parts manufacturers, we dismantled the iPad and introduced it here. We dismantled the $499 model.

Using the iPhone's manufacturing experience

The most difficult job of disassembling the iPad is to open the case. I have seen the iPhone and I know that Apple prefers not to reveal the design of the screw. This hobby has not changed on the iPad. The resin edge protruding from the upper casing can be tightly fitted to the lower casing of the aluminum alloy, so no screw holes need to be reserved. Because of this type of fitting, we only use a screwdriver to force it apart (Figure 2).

There is no screw on the iPad case, which is called a snap-in type. It can only be inserted into a screwdriver. The picture on the right is obfuscated for privacy.

It took more than 5 minutes to open the case to observe the internal disassembly team members, noting that most of the internal parts are black (Figure 3). “Even the motherboard is painted black, is it looking beautiful after being disassembled?” (an engineer of a component manufacturer).
