High-efficiency LED driver LTC3219 and its application analysis

The LTC3219 is an inductorless, low noise, high efficiency LED driver that provides nine independent configurable current sources for primary, secondary and RGB display/display devices, as well as 64 levels of brightness adjustment control. These universal current sources are digitally controllable for independent dimming, brightness, flicker and grayscale control, and can be programmed via a simple two-wire I2C serial interface.

The LTC3219 has a variety of low noise charge pump operating modes of 1X, 1.5X and 2.0X that operate at low noise constant frequency and automatically optimize efficiency based on voltage on the LED current source. The LTC3219 also has a short-circuit and over-temperature protection circuit inside, and its soft-start circuit prevents inrush current and excessive input noise during startup and mode switching. The device is mainly used for display of cellular phones, lighting equipment, and video phones with QVGA display.

The LTC3219 is available in a 3 mm × 3 mm x 0.75 mm flat QFN-20 package with pinouts as shown in Figure 1. Its pin functions are as follows:

CPO: LED power charge pump output. This pin needs to be connected to the ground with a 2.2μF ceramic capacitor;

ULED1~ULED9: LED drive current source output. The current range is 0 to 28 mA. The magnitude of its current can be controlled by software and an internal 6-bit linear DAC in 64 steps. Each output can be activated by setting the data registers (REG1 to REG9) corresponding to each LED segment to 0. In addition, they can also be used as the open-drain output of I2C. Can be grounded when not in use;

DVcc: Data I/O Power Supply. This pin can be used to set the logic reference level of the LTC3219. When the pin voltage is below the undervoltage lockout threshold, the data register is restarted, which is typically used after the device is powered up. This pin needs to be connected to a 0.1μF ceramic capacitor;

SCL: I2C clock input. The logic level of this pin needs to refer to DVcc;

SDA: Serial data input. Control of the device can be achieved by moving one bit of serial data per clock cycle. Its logic level can refer to DVcc;

ENU: Enable input. Used to pre-select the ULED output to be turned on or off. When the foot switches from low (open) to high (on), the selected LED illuminates. If the output controlled by the ENU is valid and the other outputs are also active, the LTC3219 will reset to the 1X charge pump mode on the falling edge of the ENU; and when the output controlled by the ENU is active and the other outputs are inactive, the LTC3219 The charge pump mode is turned off. The logic level of the ENU can be referred to DVcc. Can be grounded when not in use;

GND: System ground. The foot and the welding pad (21 feet) must be connected to the grounding plate during use;

ClP, C2P, ClM, C2M: Charge pump fast capacitor pins. A 1μF ceramic capacitor should be connected between C1P and C2P, ClM and C2M respectively;

VBAT: The power terminal of the device. Use a 2.2μF low ESR ceramic capacitor for use.
