Development is the process of converting a latent electrostatic image on a photosensitive drum into a visible toner image using charged toner. The polarity of the toner charged by the developing toner is opposite to that of the electrostatic latent image on the surface of the drum. During development, the electrostatic latent image on the surface of the drum is the force of the field, and the toner is adsorbed on the drum. The higher the potential of the electrostatic latent image, the stronger the ability to adsorb the toner; the lower the potential of the electrostatic latent image, the weaker the ability to adsorb the toner. The amount of adsorbed toner varies depending on the potential of the electrostatic latent image (how much charge). In this way, the electrostatic latent image, which is not visible on the surface of the photosensitive drum, becomes a visible toner image with different shades of gray corresponding to the shade of the original. In an electrostatic copying machine, the charging of the toner is usually obtained by the friction between the toner and the carrier. The polarity of the ribbon after rubbing is opposite to that of the carrier.
