In 2015, JPA showed off the first jet turbine backpack JB-9, which was reported by many media at the time. JPA is run by CEO David Mayman and chief designer Nelson Tyler. In the US and Europe, JPA has tested backpacks; recently the company began selling backpacks. Now JPA has a new plan: to develop an electric manned aircraft.
In an interview, Mehman said that although some companies (such as Joby and Airbus) are developing high-speed winged aircraft with a speed of 320-480 kilometers per hour, JPA's solution is different. He said: "We have chosen a manned multi-rotor design." He also said that some of the technology is mature enough to be put into use.
The JPA electric plane is about 90 miles (145 kilometers) per hour, and because it has no wings, it is much smaller. The aircraft has six arms that extend from the top chassis, two in the front, two in the middle, and two in the rear, and the middle arms can be folded.
Mehman said the plane was short and narrow and could be placed in a parking garage. The flying tool does not have a conventional landing skid and has a small ball at the bottom.
The team is ready to propel the aircraft forward with 12 wooden propellers instead of using carbon propellers because the wood is lighter and more resistant to damage. JPA aircraft can fly close to the ground and fly at a height of about 2 meters.
Although the current design can only sit on one person, if you can solve the battery capacity problem, you can sit in multiple people in the future. According to Mehman's estimate, it may be possible to sit 2 people within 4 years. In order to achieve the goal, the team designed an electric car system to mount the generator in the flight tool.
The design team is ready to make a small turbine engine that is about the size of a Coke can. When the jet pack was developed, the team had the experience of making a small engine that had the same power as a generator. The UAV industry has accumulated advanced automatic navigation and stabilization technologies, so JPA does not have much research and development work.
So how safe is this kind of transportation? Even if half of the engine is stopped, the flying tool can still land at a safe speed. The team is still developing a landing system that can land in a certain way, such as a ballistic parachute deceleration, and the aircraft can also be equipped with an airbag cushioning system.
Mehman said that if the funds are sufficient, it will take about six months to develop the first prototype. He also said that the airspace of 100 to 1000 feet has not been used yet, and this space will be used in the future.
