Recently, the University of Minnesota has successfully developed blood vessels that can grow on their own and successfully tested on lambs. The research was published in the journal Nature Communications in September this year.
Robert Tranquillo, Ph.D. in bioengineering, said, “This will be the first time in the medical community to have a material that can grow on its own after implantation. In the future, children with heart disease can replace multiple blood vessels with one-time surgery. Into surgery."
According to the research note, researchers first placed the sheep's skin cells on a special tube and delivered nutrients to the vicinity of the tube so that the cells could grow nutrients. With the attachment of the tube, the cells form a certain shape, and the proteins in it will precipitate around the cells.
Subsequently, the researchers will remove the cells, leaving the protein scaffold, which is the "blood vessel" to be implanted in the lamb. The researchers first removed three 5-week-old lamb hearts into the blood vessels of the lungs, and then implanted these artificial blood vessels. The results show that these protein scaffolds are slowly wrapped by the lamb's cells and they gradually fuse and grow as the lamb grows. In the process of real-time tracking, the lamb has remained healthy. When lambs are a year old, their size is 4-5 times longer than when they were operated.
When the researchers removed these artificial blood vessels from the lambs again, they found that their length and width did indeed grow by 50%, and their function was similar to that of normal blood vessels.
This successful experiment will undoubtedly facilitate the development of biological research in the field of artificial blood vessels, and it will also help more children to suffer from surgery. For the biological 3D printing market, it may also be the opportunity.
