At this year's lighting show in Philadelphia, USA, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors will showcase an LED prototype that promotes healthy plant growth: Oslon Square Hyper Red. This third-generation 2 W-class LED has improved emission characteristics, higher light output and superior corrosion resistance, so the plant lighting system with Oslon Square Hyper Red is highly cost-effective.

Plant growth requires two basic elements: water and light. Today, commercial growers can control all stages of plant growth with LEDs of different wavelengths. For example, with the 660 nm wavelength of the Oslon Square Hyper Red prototype, you can control the growth of plants during flowering. Together with the deep blue version of 450 nm and the far red light of 730 nm, the Oslon range of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors perfectly covers the entire process of plant growth.
This high-power LED prototype integrates a 2 mm2 chip for even better performance. The developers have adopted the latest technology, with a current of 700 mA and an operating temperature of 25 ° C, the typical radiant power can reach 905 mW, and the radiation efficiency can reach 60%. This means that compared to the current Oslon SSL, the radiated power is increased by 13% and the radiation efficiency is increased by 25%. The beam angle of the Oslon Square Hyper Red is 120°.

Oslon Square Hyper Red is available in the same package size as the existing Oslon SSL version, so it's easy to replace. Switching to this new product has two economic implications for customers: First, the new high-power LEDs are more powerful than their predecessors; second, an Oslon Square Hyper Red can replace two Oslon SSL LEDs. The LED is expected to begin mass production by the end of 2017.
