The road to large-scale OLED panel (1): LG actively promotes

"Beyond the display performance of CRT", "can express the ultimate black", "thickness is only a few mm, can achieve ultra-thin"...

Due to its excellent performance, OLED panels have long been regarded as the "true god" of flat-panel TV display panels. In October 2007, Sony achieved mass production of the world's first 11-inch OLED TV. But then there will be no more. In 2007, TV manufacturers such as Toshiba and South Korea's Samsung Electronics have said that they will mass produce OLED TVs around 2009. But at least until the end of 2009, the two companies have not yet shown signs of OLED TV to the market Note 1).

Note 1) In December 2007, Toshiba announced plans for mass production of large-scale OLED TVs of 30 inches or more in 2009.

LG is actively promoting large-scale

A large OLED panel for TV that seems to be stagnating. In fact, R&D is now active again.

The most obvious of these is the South Korean LG Group. South Korea's LG Electronics released a 15-inch OLED TV in August 2009 and went on sale in South Korea in December of the same year. The price is 3 million won (based on 1 yuan = 170 won), which is about 176,000 yuan.

The OLED panel of this TV is developed by the same group of Korean LG monitors. The peak brightness is 450 cd/m2, the contrast ratio is 100,000:1, and the color performance range is as high as 98% for NTSC. The material used in the TFT (thin film transistor) driving element is polycrystalline silicon crystallized by a "SPC (solid phase crystallization)" high-temperature process. The R (red), G (green), and B (blue) three-color luminescent materials of the OLED light-emitting layer are separately formed into films by vacuum shadow mask evaporation. And by using a cavity (multiple reflection interference) structure*, the range of color expression is expanded.

* Cavity structure: A method of improving the color purity and intensity of luminescence of OLED materials by utilizing the interference effect of repeated light reflection between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. However, the thickness deviation of the RGB three-color light-emitting layer needs to be controlled to be several % or less.

LG Display has begun manufacturing small OLED panels for mobile phones. It also announced plans to launch a new OLED panel production line in the first quarter of 2010, and spare no effort to expand the scale. In addition, in addition to the business cooperation agreement with OLED material supplier Idemitsu Kosei in June 2009, LG Display also announced the acquisition of OLED business development pioneer Eastman Kodak's OLED business in December 2009. Shows the trend of enhanced technology development 2).

Note 2) In December 2009, LG Group reached an agreement on the acquisition of Kodak's OLED business. The final acquisition body is expected to be generated from LG Electronics, LG Display, and LG Chem.

Behind this series of measures is because LG Display has clearly stated that it will mass-produce 20-inch models in 2010, 30-inch mass production in 2011, and mass production of 40-inch large-scale OLED panels in 2012. Won Kim, the company's vice president of OLED sales and marketing, said: "Although the price will be high, consumers will be able to purchase 40-inch OLED TVs by 2012."

The market for small OLED panels is steadily expanding

The reason why LG Group is actively developing large-scale OLED panels is because of the strong demand for small OLED panels. Mobile devices, smart phones, portable media players, digital cameras and many other portable devices are beginning to be fully equipped with OLED panels (Figure 1). These image portable products choose OLED panels because "its superb display performance is easy to be advertised to users" (DisplaySearch small and medium FPD director, Minho). In November 2009, Casio Computer and Letterpress announced the formation of a new company to mass produce small OLED panels for products such as digital cameras. Manufacturers involved in the OLED panel business have also begun to increase.

Now, with mobile phones and smart phones as the center, OLED panels are beginning to gain popularity. On the other hand, although the roads equipped with desktop equipment are still quite difficult, after entering 2010, the enlargement of the panels will enter the field of vision.

According to display research company DisplaySearch, the total supply of OLED panels in 2009 was approximately $845 million (Figure 2). Among them, the OLED panel used in the main screen of the mobile phone is about 521 million US dollars, accounting for 61% of the total supply. By 2016, the supply of OLED panels for mobile phone main screens is likely to expand to more than five times the current level, reaching approximately $2.82 billion.

Figure 2: Mobile phones and smart phones drive the forecast of the supply amount of various types of OLED panel equipment in the market. Before 2011, it will mainly drive the market with the main screen of mobile phones (including smart phones). On the other hand, it is expected that the market for OLEDs in the TV field will gradually expand after 2011. This figure is based on DisplaySearch data.

With the advancement of mass production, Samsung Mobile Display (SMD), the industry's largest manufacturer, has steadily increased its mass production yield to 80% (320×240 pixels), VGA (640×480). Pixel level is 60%" (DisplaySearch) Note 3). It can be said that the technical experience of improving mass production is being solidly accumulated. (To be continued reporter: Saeki Shinya)
