China Unicom\Huawei Ocean Construction 6,000km South Atlantic Submarine Cable

On June 27th, China Unicom, Cameroon Telecom and Huawei Ocean signed a South Atlantic International Submarine Cable (SAIL) construction agreement in Shanghai. Cameroon has positioned the project as an important step in the development of the digital economy.

With a total length of about 6,000 kilometers, the SAIL cable will connect the African continent with the American continent and become the largest cable transmission route between Africa and South America with the smallest transmission time, providing high quality and reliable intercontinental communication services.

Li Wei, general manager of China Unicom's international business department, said that under the “One Belt, One Road” initiative, the SAIL submarine cable project is a telecom operation enterprise and equipment manufacturing enterprise, and participates in international capacity cooperation, explores overseas markets, and cooperates “going out”. As an important channel for international information flow, the strategic position of submarine optical cables has been continuously strengthened and is a battleground for big countries.

On the 26th of this month, most of the AAE-1 submarine cable (Asia-Africa Europe No. 1 submarine cable) system initiated and led by China Unicom in 2012 was officially put into commercial use. The AAE-1 submarine cable is 25,000 kilometers long. It starts from Hong Kong in the east and connects to France in the west. It connects Asia, Africa and Europe. It is the longest, most complex, most technologically advanced and lowest time submarine cable system in the world in 15 years.

China Unicom has invested in more than 30 submarine cables in key directions such as Asia Pacific, Trans-Pacific, Asia, Africa and Europe. Due to the opening of the AAE-1 submarine cable, China Unicom has become the only operator in China to realize the independent double-submarine cable coverage of the Asia-Africa maritime information highway, and is the only operator that can provide the sea bypass of the Straits of Malacca.
