Apple acquires micro LED screen - the first device to use OLED screen

According to the technology blog AppleInsider, although the upgraded Apple Watch is expected to use the same OLED screen as the previous generation, Apple's Smart Watch may be undergoing a major adjustment next year. It is said that Apple is developing micro LED technology for the future Apple Watch phenotype.

Taiwan's "Electronic Times" quoted the supply chain on Friday, saying that Apple will use the micro LED panel in the second half of next year to replace the OLED panel currently used by Apple Watch. Apple has set up a laboratory in northern Taiwan in April 2015 to develop micro LED technology.

The size of the micro LED is only 1 micron to 100 micron. The current production cost of the panel is higher than that of the OLED panel, and the OLED panel is more expensive than the LCD panel currently used by most of Apple's products, including the iPhone, iPad and MacBook.

The "Electronic Times" report did not give much detail, but based on the fact that Apple acquired the micro LED screen manufacturer LuxVue in May 2014.

Apple has acquired micro-LED screen manufacturer LuxVue

Currently, Apple relies on third-party vendors to supply screens for its devices, including Samsung, the main rival. The acquisition of LuxVue suggests that Apple may wish to develop new display technologies on its own, rather than relying on external suppliers.

It should be noted that the Electronic Times is not accurate in predicting Apple's future product plans, but Apple's acquisition of LuxVue and its energy-saving technologies may benefit Apple Watch, because energy efficiency is critical for Apple's smart watches. . Therefore, it is also okay for Apple to seek to use micro LED technology in next-generation wearable devices.

Display experts familiar with micro LED technology said in 2015 that they believe the technology is suitable for replacing OLEDs and that Apple Watch is a suitable candidate for micro LED screens. Apple currently uses OLED technology in Apple Watch, which helps extend the battery life of the device. Apple Watch is also Apple's first device to use OLED screens.

Micro LED technology is not currently used in any of the consumer products already on the market, and it is still difficult to produce a micro LED screen size suitable for consumer products, so its rumors for Apple Watch next year may be too optimistic. But if Apple can really make a breakthrough in micro LED technology, it will be the first company to introduce micro LED technology into mass production.
