LDAC is a wireless audio coding technology developed by Sony. It was first unveiled at the CES Consumer Electronics Show in 2015. At the time, Sony stated that LDAC technology was three times more efficient than standard Bluetooth encoding and compression systems. In this way, those high-resolution audio files will not be excessively compressed when wirelessly transmitted, so that the sound quality will be greatly lost.
According to the definition given by Sony, LDAC is an encoding technology that can wirelessly transmit high-resolution audio, allowing users to wirelessly transmit high-quality audio with an amazing code rate of 990 kbps.
Unlike traditional Bluetooth encoding technologies such as SBC, LDAC transmits high-resolution audio content without any degradation, and allows the device to transmit more data through wireless means, resulting in better sound quality performance. According to Sony, this is mainly due to "more efficient coding and optimized information packaging."
LDAC provides three transmission modes, the first is the 990 kbps mode with quality as the highest priority, the second is the default normal mode of 660 kbps, and the last is the 330 kbps mode similar to the ordinary Bluetooth standard, mainly to ensure the connection quality. In the screenshot of the Android O developer preview, we can see that LDAC also provides these three transmission modes in the system.
It should be noted that what LDAC transmits is also a lossy audio, not lossless. This point Sony does not deny that it indicates that the audio after transmission is no longer "high resolution", and it is called " High-quality "audio. However, the official claimed that even so, the loss of information caused by the transmission of LDAC is still much less than the traditional Bluetooth transmission.
The biggest feature of LDAC technology is that it ensures that the wireless audio transmission can also have enough information, which is implemented into the actual music listening sense, that is, the sound is fuller. The traditional Bluetooth transmission is shriveled and lacking due to lack of information, as if listening to a voice without emotion, only some recognizable melody remains. With the support of LDAC technology, the density and intensity of the sound are higher, the music details are richer, and the low frequency is also deeper. Not only is it an empty volume, but the "texture" is stronger.
Of course, you can't expect LDAC's hearing to compete with wired connections. Considering the gap between the transmission rate and the anti-interference ability of the two, this is really unrealistic. However, the quality of wireless music in the LDAC environment is indeed very close to wired. It is worth noting that LDAC transmission does not mean that it can magically make low bit rate audio also exceed its own level, because this technology solves the problem of wireless transmission bandwidth. Therefore, within a certain limit, the higher the audio bit rate, the more the potential of LDAC can be realized.
However, LDAC has some flaws in the experience. The first is that its power consumption will be significantly higher than ordinary Bluetooth. In addition, the quality priority mode of LDAC is easily interfered by wireless signals such as Wi-Fi, and the sound will appear intermittent. At this time, we have to choose a mode with a lower transmission rate.
In the past, LDAC technology was almost regarded as "Sony only", only applied to its own mobile phones, players, headphones, Bluetooth speakers. Because LDAC technology relies on the simultaneous support of audio sources and speaker systems, this makes the technology an exclusive highlight of Sony equipment. Nowadays, as long as the mobile phone with Android O installed, LDAC can be used to allow users to enjoy wireless high-definition music on the playback system that supports the technology, but it is temporarily unavailable on Apple's iPhone.
