Austrian Microelectronics, a global leader in high-performance analog ICs and sensors for the consumer, industrial and automotive applications industries, today announced that Continental, an automotive system manufacturer, has officially selected Austrian Microelectronics for its robust and accurate AS5134 angular position sensor chip. The AS5134 and the recently introduced AS5132 sensor chip are in full compliance with the requirements of the AEC-Q100 automotive standard and are non-contact magnetic position sensor chips optimized for high-speed brushless DC motors (BLDCs). The AS5134 is used to sense the position of the rotor in the motor in the control unit in the new dual clutch transmissions (DCTs), providing angle measurements for better and more efficient rectification solutions. Equipment features include high speed accuracy and reliability.
The dual clutch gearbox is a more advanced form of automatic transmission in passenger cars. In some newly developed dual clutch gearboxes, brushless DC motors are used to convert gears and control dual clutches. A dual clutch gearbox can use up to four brushless DC motors.
The integrated module designed by Continental can control the motor of the vehicle by the field-centered rectification technology. In this technology, the input current of each stator is determined by referring to the angular displacement of the rotor. More accurate measurements of the rotor angle will result in lower torque jitter, smoother operation, and higher power efficiency. The special advantage of the AS5134 high-precision features is that it increases the starting torque of the motor. This allows the engine to reach the optimum operating speed faster, thereby reducing energy consumption.
The AS5134 magnetic position sensor chip is characterized by low propagation delay. The output is calculated from the input of the sensing magnet to the angle away from the chip. The delay is only 22 μs. This guarantees a high degree of precision when the rotor is rotating at high speeds: The AS5134 can measure angles accurate to 1° with an error of only ±2° at rotation speeds up to 82,000 rpm.
Continental Transmission's control module is a complete integrated unit that cannot be easily used for repair or replacement. Therefore, the reliability of modules such as position sensors is very important. Like all austriamicrosystems' magnetic position sensors, the AS5134 has a patented differential input developed by austriamicrosystems that protects it from discrete magnetic fields. Austriamicrosystems' position sensor chip therefore does not require shielding, helping to reduce bill of materials and reduce assembly costs.
