Digital Trends stated that the development of this fabric has been going on for quite some time. In the past 11 years, Wang Zhonglin and his team have been developing this kind of fabric, reducing its weight, improving flexibility, and making it practical. They embed solar cells in long fibers and use solar power to generate electricity, and weave nano-generators that generate electricity by friction, using elongated super-capacitors to store electrical energy.

Current prototype fabrics are fairly small - only 35 square inches (about 226 square centimeters), and less flexible than cotton. The key to improving flexibility is to make the fibers finer. According to Wang Zhonglin, even if only a few current smart fibers are woven into the garment, the generated electricity is enough to charge the cell phone.

Digital Trends said, but this technology will take some time to enter the practical stage. Wang Zhonglin said, “There is still a lot of work to be done: first, to make the fibers finer and to increase their flexibility; secondly, to improve durability so that the clothes can wear longer; and third, we must continue to improve product performance. The higher the better."
