Broadcom Launches Best Performance NFC Controller for Mobile Payment and Transaction Applications

Broadcom announced at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2016) that it has introduced the industry's best performing Near Field Communication (NFC) controller. The BCM20797 offers a wider range of transaction coverage, enhanced security and faster transaction speeds, making it ideal for mobile payment and mobile trading applications. This latest device is part of Broadcom's efforts to provide innovative technology to its customers in the NFC market to drive further technology development and increase end-equipment integration. With the most competitive BOM cost and the smallest PCB package, the BCM20797 helps original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) seamlessly and cost-effectively integrate NFC into smaller mobile and wearable devices. In addition, the latest BCM20797 has the latest innovation called Virtual Operating Environment (VEE), which significantly improves host card emulation (HCE) performance. VEE halve the transaction time of HCE, without the need for a security module (SE) to improve security, and also to perform transactions with the host turned off, so users can complete a transaction even if the device is powered off .

With a 10x10 mm2 antenna, the BCM20797 is a leader in the industry with a coverage radius of 6 cm. Thanks to its low spurious emissions, this controller eliminates the need for additional filters and therefore reduces BOM cost by 30% and PCB package by 50% compared to competing solutions. The BCM20797 also has a proprietary feature that reduces power consumption by 50% when polling tags.
