Tencent Digital (Wen Xin) According to the phoneArena website, Nokia used its Air Scale radio platform to test its 5G technology with U.S. mobile operator US Cellular. The two companies tested using the 28 GHz spectrum that US Cellular belongs to, obtained the highest data transfer rate of 5 Gbps (approximately equal to 640 MB/s), and the delay was less than 2 ms. They transmit 6 4K video at the same time in the test, in order to understand the performance of 5G network.
The two companies used base stations and "user equipment" to conduct tests in indoor and outdoor environments, respectively. The test is first performed in an environment where there is no visual obstacle between the base station and the "user equipment," and then obstacles such as drywall, windows, and metal plates are added between the two to simulate the real-life environment. In addition, base stations and user equipment are also moved behind trees and flowers. Indoor testing is done in a lab at US Cellular.
Michael S. Irizarry, executive vice president and chief scientific officer of US Cellular, stated, “We are excited about this 5G test conducted with Nokia. The test results are satisfactory, including 5Gbps data transmission speed. , Ultra low latency less than 2 milliseconds, simultaneous transmission of multiple 4K video. We strive to provide customers with the latest technology to improve their lives or businesses, and we will continue to provide high-speed, high-quality networks that meet our customers' needs.â€
According to Ricky Corker, head of Nokia North America, "Nokia will continue to accelerate the development and testing of 5G technologies in North America. We are pleased to use this joint 5G test to expand our cooperation with US Cellular. Our Tests show that 5G technology not only strengthens US Cellular’s efforts to lead customer needs, but also creates opportunities for new services that require high bandwidth and low latency.â€
phoneArena said that US Cellular also stated that it plans to cooperate with Ericsson to conduct 5G testing on the 15GHz spectrum. The latter has submitted to the FCC (United States Federal Communications Commission) an application for joint testing with US Cellular next month.
