Sony Pictures and Nokia announced on Monday that the two companies will jointly produce and distribute virtual reality content, including 360-degree live video content, allowing fans to get up close and familiar with the events organized by Sony Pictures.
As part of the collaboration, Sony Pictures will use Nokia's OZO virtual reality camera to create 360-degree 3D video. Sony will also add Nokia's SDK to its Privilege Plus application (the Privilege Plus is dedicated to Sony-made smartphones).
Pete Wood, senior vice president of digital sales at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, said on Monday: “As we enter the VR experience market and expand the scale of production and distribution, it is important to work with top technology companies like Nokia. â€
Nokia introduced the Ozo VR camera for the first time more than a year ago. The company began accepting Ozo's pre-order in December of last year, but the price is very expensive: each camera sells for 60,000 US dollars, and additional equipment also needs thousands of dollars or more.
Nokia is not the only company that offers VR capture and production solutions. For example, Xiao Bian has reported that Lytro also released its own light field camera video. But these companies also face competition from another tech giant. Google has already launched its own 3D VR system JUMP.
